Aloha Hawaii!!

 

You heard that right! The next Docomomo US National Symposium will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii from September 25-28, 2019 in collaboration with the Docomomo US/Hawaii chapter. From the iconic East-West Center, to the white sand beaches, to all things Ossipoff, come celebrate Hawai‘i’s unique blend of East-meets-West tropical modernism.

 

The 2019 Symposium will:

  • Explore how architects applied modernism’s core tenets within Hawai‘i’s climate and multicultural context, and what these buildings can teach us today as the world grapples with climate change and increasing urbanization.
  • Discuss the impact of World War II and statehood on the people, the culture, and the architecture of the territory and then state.
  • Celebrate the iconic Hawai‘i State Capitol Building its 50th anniversary and hear from key persons associated with the project, and efforts to maintain and preserve it.
  • Feature exclusive tours of significant mid-century homes, neighborhoods and districts, many that are closed to the public.


Save the Date - the 2020 National Symposium will be take place June 3-6 in Chicago.

Symposium Schedule

Kick Off with Ossipoff

Good morning Honolulu! Guests have this morning and afternoon on their own. Please see the tours page for suggested self-guided tours of Waikiki. There are no organized tours on this day. Docomomo US and Docomomo US Chapters/Friends will meet in the morning and afternoon for annual discussions. In the evening, guests can pick up credentials at the Outrigger Canoe Club and enjoy an opening reception.

East Meets West

Morning sessions and registration take place at the East-West Center in the Imin International Conference Center. The day will begin with an Oli, a native Hawaiian chant, and lectures will cover Hawaiian Modernism and Asian-American Architects in Post-War Hawaii. For lunch, guests will enjoy a self-guided walking tour from the East-West campus to the University of Hawaii Manoa campus. Afternoon bus and walking tours complete the day. An optional architectural cocktail crawl will take place in the evening.

Registration for the Symposium opens in February but there is no need to wait! Travel and hotel details with exclusive discounts for Docomomo members are now available. Many rates are good for several days before and after the symposium so that attendees can fully experience Hawaii’s natural beauty and warm hospitality.
