Greetings from Michigan! From the cars that carried tourists across America to the pleasure boat industry to the diners, motels, and roadside attractions across the state, Michigan is the perfect place to explore this year’s Tour Day theme: Travel and Leisure.

Join Docomomo US/Hawaii for a blended / virtual format walking tour of West Waikiki where you can view many of Structural Engineer Alfred Yee’s precast buildings. The pre-engineered components were made in Kapolei and brought on site to be assembled, can be viewed in detail while walking along the Ala Wai Canal and Ala Moana Blvd. Other modernism buildings will be pointed out as well.

Join Docomomo US/Northern California for a walking tour in San Francisco's North Waterfront. We'll explore the theme of Travel & Leisure by visiting the Streamline Moderne Aquatic Park Bathhouse and Ghirardelli Square--an early adaptive reuse project involving modernists Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, Lawrence Halprin, and Bobbie Stauffacher Solomon--among other sites. A neighborhood that many local residents may pass over assuming it is just for tourists, the North Waterfront has an important history of Modern architecture and urbanism that shaped the future of the city.

Join Historic Albany and Redburn Development for a tour of the former Parkmart, now the Spiral, a unique building in Downtown Albany that combines a parking garage and retail space with a crazy, curly ramp connecting the two. Designed by architect Robert Trudeau in 1978 for an urban grocery store, the Spiral recently underwent restoration on the concrete coffers and the spiral ramp. We'll hear about the recent restoration work done and get a peek at the interior, one of Albany's newest music venues.

Join DOCOMOMO US/New York Tri-State for a guided in-person tour of Nivola: Sandscapes, an exhibition dedicated to the work of artist Costantino Nivola at the Magazzino Italian Art Foundation in Cold Spring, NY. A native of Sardinia and longtime resident of Springs, NY on Long Island, Nivola (1911–1988) created large-scale architectural reliefs and sculpture installations in collaboration with prominent Modern architects.

For this year’s Tour Day, Docomomo US/Chicago is teaming up with Forgotten Chicago for a walking tour of Peterson Avenue. The street is lined with small postwar commercial buildings that sprang up when Peterson Avenue was one of the major highways leading into the city. With their zigzag rooflines, staggered facades, and 1960s flair, this group of tiny modernist gems brings a touch of Southern California car culture to the northwest side of Chicago. The tour will include the former Lincoln Inn Motel from 1962 as well as one of Chicago’s most iconic neon restaurant signs.

SCA, America's roadside heritage advocates, hosts awesome Zoom presentations every month for members only. But for Tour Day, we're opening the vaults and providing three of our best talks for free! Available all month long are these fun, informative, entertaining programs: "Roadside Revival" with Stuckey's CEO Stephanie Stuckey, "The Negro Motorist Green Book in Arkansas" with Arkansas National Register Coordinator Ralph Wilcox, and "From Mesmerizing Mermaids to Water-skiing Elephants: Roadside Attractions at Florida Springs" with historian Rick Kilby. Join author Bryan Farr, founder of Historic Route 20, as he details the history of America's Longest Highway, US Route 20! You will hear how an early Native American path became the earliest postal roads to main Westward Expansion routes! Hear the tales of the road from witches to the wild west. Find out which Presidents called 20 home and how Lincoln made history along the highway.

We invite you to join us on Saturday October 9th -- as part of Docomomo US National Tour Day 2021 highlighting architecture & design aspects of travel & leisure at mid-20th century -- for Portal Bridge Picnic, an outdoor celebration of modernist design at Pittsburgh's beloved Point State Park.

Inspired by “A Bit of Japan is seen in the Eaves”, a handmade photo album that Junzo Yoshimura made during the time he lived and worked at the Raymond Farm in New Hope PA, (1939-1940). This exciting new program will take visitors on a trip to the Hudson Valley to find “a bit of Japan ” in its architecture and landscape. This trip brings guests to the James Rose Center and Russell Wright’s “Manitoga” estate. The tours are led by the curators and highlight the immaculate use of Japanese influence in each site’s architecture and landscape design.

Schweikher House will offer a selection of in-depth specialty tours that will focus on the travels of Paul Schweikher and Martyl Langsdorf and how their experiences influenced their work as architect and artist respectively.

Mid Tex Mod is excited to share our theme for Docomomo US Tour Day 2021: BURGER TRAIL. Throughout the year on our MTM Facebook page, we’ll highlight roadside diners serving our favorite snacks—burgers, fries, shakes, and more! On October 9th for Tour Day, we’ll feature several locations from our membership area, including Austin, San Antonio, Waco, and Corpus Christi. Additional details coming soon!

Join New Haven Preservation Trust and Becker + Becker for a preview tour of the Hotel Marcel, currently under construction in the Pirelli Building in New Haven, Connecticut. The brutalist building, recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1967 and completed in 1970.

Join Paradise Palms on a three-hour guided tour aboard a double-decker, open-air bus while discussing the architecture and storied past of homes found throughout the Paradise Palms community. 

The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and Mid-Century Modern Midland (MCMM) will participate in Docomomo US Tour Day on October 9, 2021. The Home and Studio will feature in-person tours of the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio and walking tours of the Dow Family Homes as well as structures representing Mr. Dow’s early career. MCMM will offer walking tours that highlight the 39 residential structures designed by Midland’s leading MCM architects in the Applewood and Valley Drive neighborhood.
