Inspired by “A Bit of Japan is seen in the Eaves”, a handmade photo album that Junzo Yoshimura made during the time he lived and worked at the Raymond Farm in New Hope PA, (1939-1940). This exciting new program will take visitors on a trip to the Hudson Valley to find “a bit of Japan ” in its architecture and landscape. This trip brings guests to the James Rose Center and Russell Wright’s “Manitoga” estate. The tours are led by the curators and highlight the immaculate use of Japanese influence in each site’s architecture and landscape design.

After being employed at Tuttle, Seelye, Place and Raymond, James Rose turned his focus to working on private gardens that created an intimate relationship between human beings, nature, and architecture. His designs also created a fusion of indoor and outdoor space. Most of Rose’s later works were greatly influenced by the Japanese garden style, and he even adopted the religion of Zen Buddhism. The time Rose spent in Okinawa during World War II and his many subsequent visits to Japan, nurtured his fondness for Japanese gardens.

Russel Wright was an American Modern designer from the 1930s through the 1950s. He was also postwar involved in Asia through the American foreign aid program promoting the idea of “Asian Modern”. Wright and his associates gave the Japanese government advice on the promotion of handmade craft, selection and modification of crafts for the US consumers. Wright also helped the official launch of the design policy and system for the Japanese handcrafts industries, as well as contributed to establish craft-based Japanese modern design. Please wear flat, outdoor-terrain walking shoes for uneven ground and dress appropriately for being outside in the weather. As a reminder, the experience includes a mandatory moderate hike through the Landscape to access the House, Studio & Design Gallery.
