The Peaks

Site overview

Built in 1953 to bring high end retail to Central Beaverton, the buildings’ architectural style is an example of post-war modern American architecture. Floor to ceiling 12’ high glazing wraps two elevations with a 4’ cantilever roof supported by 12x 24 structural glue-lam beams. The ceiling has a signature jagged peak profile, hence it’s nick name- The Peaks.

General Description

Quoted from Society of Commercial Archeology VP, Jeremy Ebersole: “The Peaks is a quintessential example of the exaggerated modern style of architecture, one of the best in the entire Portland metro area. Perfectly displaying the style’s characteristic soaring, cantilevered roofs, expansive storefronts, and virtuosic exposed structural elements, the building is powerfully optimistic, bold, and resonant not only for its period of construction in the Atomic Age but for a vibrant city of today.”
