Beth L. Savage is the Director of the Center for Historic Buildings, in GSA’s Public Buildings Service, Office of Architecture & Engineering. In this capacity she also serves as the agency’s Federal Preservation Officer. The Center leads the stewardship of more than 500 buildings providing nearly 60 million square feet of workspace for federal employees throughout the United States. About one-third of GSA’s owned portfolio dates from the mid-century modern era, which presents evaluation, performance and preservation challenges. She came to GSA as the Regional Historic Preservation Officer for the National Capital Region after her long tenure at the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places, where she served as a multi-State liaison and the Managing Editor of the technical publications program and website. Her professional experience includes documenting, assessing, speaking and writing on Modernism and the recent past; maritime, roadside and vernacular historic resources; transportation corridors and African American historic places. She has served on the program planning committees for each Preserving the Recent Past conference since 1995.
