Frank Lloyd Wright used glass and steel, materials he called basic tools of machine-age architecture, to complement the sleek, gleaming contours of the merchandise displayed in this Park Avenue Mercedes-Benz showroom. The client, Maximilian Hoffman, was an early importer of European automobiles for the U.S. luxury car market. The curvilinear surfaces and mirrors visually expanded this 3,600-square-foot, ground-floor space, which accommodated five automobiles. Despite a late effort to designate the property—one of only three completed Wright-designed projects in New York City—the showroom was demolished in 2013.
