Malcolm X College on Chicago’s Near West Side was a 1971 Miesian design by Gene Summers, an architect who had served as Mies van der Rohe’s design assistant on the Neue National Gallery in Berlin. The college was a perfectly symmetrical composition that extended like a bridge. Long, lean and low, the building was planned on a 24’ by 24’ module with three levels above grade, an inset glass ground level, a concourse below and two third-floor courtyards. The corners were treated with a double redentation, and followed Miesian precedent with attached beams in a dark black color. In 2016, the college was demolished and replaced with a new facility directly across the street on West Jackson Boulevard. (Adapted from Time Tells blog)
