Discover the mid-century transformation of Oakland’s Lake Merritt. On this guided two-hour walking tour, Docomomo US/Northern California explores the architecture, landscapes, and public projects that helped redefine the lakefront in the decades after World War II.
We will consider how Modern design shaped civic life at Lake Merritt—from recreation and cultural facilities to infrastructure, open-space planning, and urban-renewal impacts. Along the route, participants will encounter over a dozen mid-century works, including the Oakland Museum of California, Mid-Century Monster, Geodesic Bird Dome, Lakeside Park Garden Center & Gardens of Lake Merritt, and Sail Boat Club House, to examine the period’s evolving ideas about public space, recreation, leisure, housing, and the city.
The tour is led by board member Petra Marar, an historic landscape architect working in Oakland, CA. It is presented as part of Docomomo Northern California's 2026 Tour Day.
The route is approximately 2.2 miles and lasts about two hours, including stops for interpretation. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, use sun protection, bring water, and dress for Oakland’s changing weather.
