James and Sarah Kirkpatrick House

Site overview

This expansive George Nelson-designed home, set on wooded lot, is a rectangular, two-story, wood and steel-frame structure of gray corrugated metal and painted wood.  Exterior walls, of panel and glass, rise two stories to the deeply overhung flat roof, seamlessly connecting indoors and outdoors. The roomy main-level includes living and dining room, kitchen, garage and small attached entry wing. The upper floor is set back on two sides accentuating the verticality of the window walls.

The new owner as of 2016 is musician Jack White of Third Man Records, located on 441 West Canfield next door to Shinola in the rejuvenated and busy Cass Corridor area of Detroit.  He owns a similar studio/storefront in Nashville, Tennessee, and recently opened a much-heralded vinyl pressing plant, also in Detroit.   Website:  https://thirdmanrecords.com/about/detroit-storefront/
