Foothill College

Site overview

Foothill College is regarded as one of the most beautiful and successful community colleges in the United States. After receiving voter approval for a $10.4 million on bond May 20, 1958, founding superintendent/Foothill College President Calvin C. Flint began working with renown architects Ernest J. Kump of Palo Alto, and Masten & Hurd of San Francisco. On Sept. 15, 1958, the Board of Trustees selected a 122-acre site in Los Altos Hills as the permanent location of Foothill College. Flint was quoted as saying, “The college must convey an atmosphere of its being friendly, personalized and informal. Offices of faculty, counselors and administrators must be readily accessible to students.” With this direction in mind, Kump and Masten & Hurd went on to design what would later be called a “major work of architecture and planning, possibly the finest design yet devised by the distinguished office of Ernest J. Kump,” by the San Francisco Chronicle. Prior to its completion, the campus received a Design Award from Progressive Architecture Magazine in 1960. The American Institute of Architects gave the campus an Honor Award in 1962 and an Award of Merit in 1963. (Adapted from the official website of Foothill College)

General Assessment

Named by an architectural critic as The perfect California design of its era,(Gebhard et al., 1985) Foothill College remains as relevant and successful today as it was when it was awarded an AIA Honor Award 35 years ago. The design team responded to and shaped the distinctive site to create a prototype for a new non-residential kind of college that retains the sense of community and cohesiveness found in more traditional campus planning while also addressing the specific needs of a diverse, commuting student body. Through sensitive site planning, careful attention to the relationship of building to adjacent landscaped area, use of distinctively regional materials and adherence to an economical, efficient and flexible modular system integrating spatial, structural, mechanical and other needs, the designers created a project that continues to provide a model for the way in which California architects think about materials and construction, the environment, educational philosophy and social mission.
