Docomomo US/New York Tri-State was organized in 1995 and was directly involved in the formation of the national organization. Since that time, Docomomo's network of volunteers comprised of architects, historians, and preservationists has organized numerous exhibits, tours, and educational events relating to modern architecture and sites. The region boasts a rich array of modern buildings representing diverse building types and styles from corporate icons such as Lever House and the Seagrams Building, to town houses and suburban homes by leading modern architects and designers of the period.
In 2004 the New York/Tri-State Chapter produced the “Manhattan Modern Map” with the Buell Center for American Architecture and the World Monuments Fund. The map, which identities over 120 modern buildings of note in the borough, is now available through architecture-related bookstores in the city.
In addition to offering several events each year, the group works on preservation advocacy for modern buildings in the New York Tri-state region, publishes a biannual newsletter, and holds events and activities for members and others interested in modern architecture and design. The chapter is working with the local landmarks commission and other local nonprofits and university architecture programs to identify and document significant Modern buildings, especially those that are not already well documented.
