While its elevated platform design protected it from destruction by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans' Phillis Wheatley Elementary School now faces forces stronger than those of 2005: neglect and disregard. The glass and steel structure was designed by architect Charles Colbert (1921-2007) in 1954. It uniquely situates itself among the surrounding 18^th and 19^th century architecture of New Orleans with its innovative modernist glass and steel design.

The Dallas Architecture Forum is pleased to announce its 14^th season.  One film, six lectures plus three special lectures in collaboration with the opening of the Dallas Center for Performing Arts, two symposia, its 365 Modern Home Reception series, an engaging Panel Series focused on issues impacting Dallas, and special members’ only events will make up the season.

As a part of the debate regarding the potential demolition of Robin Hood Gardens (1968–72) and the denial of listing by English Heritage, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is presenting an exhibition that shows this emblematic housing estate, its place in London’s cultural and urban landscape and the way of life inside its walls.

Docomomo Netherlands hosted a playful debate concerning the possible future of Marcel Breuer’s American Embassy in The Hague. Charlotte Van Emstede kindly agreed to write a little review about the problems that this important building is facing, regarding a possible change of use. 

    Docomomo US is sad to report the loss of Paul Rudolph's 1958 Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida.  Rudolph's first public building in Florida, the school district owned site was leveled on June 13th despite the vocal opposition of architects and preservation organizations.  For the complete article from Joyce Owens click here.  Additional images can be found here.

Julius Shulman, a renowned architecture photographer who depicted modern houses as the ultimate expressions of modern living and helped idealize the California lifestyle in the postwar years, died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 98.
