Biography

Ieoh Ming Pei was educated at St John's Middle School, Shanghai, China. He emigrated to the United States in 1935 and was naturalized in 1948. He studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, receiving a B. Arch. in 1940 and Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, Massachusetts, receiving his M.Arch. in 1946. He served on the National Defense Research Committee from 1943-1945. He was an instructor and later an Assistant Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design (1945-1948). He was director of architecture at Webb and Knapp, New York, from 1948-1955. He served as partner at his own firm, I.M. Pei & Partners, which later became Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners, from 1955-1989. He retired officially on January 1, 1991, but continued to work with a lighter load until his death in 2019 at the age of 102.
